Pirates!
By Melissa O. on November 20, 2009

Treasure Island is a fine book. I would recommend it to people 12 and up. Yes, the dialogue between the characters is a little hard, but it's understandable in context. What surprised me about this classic is its ambiguous pirate Long John Silver. Is he a vicious cutthroat pirate, or is he a great pretender, a con artist? This is where the Pirates of the Caribbean films must have originated in terms of a buccaneer who may or may not be blood thirsty in his greed. I probably shouldn't be surprised though, since R. L. Stevenson (the author) wrote Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Additionally, some of the assumed "good" characters in this novel are not all that good in my opinion. I'm not saying this book is modernist: it isn't. However, I really think the author wants each reader to judge for him or herself as to who is greediest, possibly misunderstood, or too human. Personally, I don't think anyone is innocent, not even the protagonist of the book, a boy named Jim Hawkins. I think you'll love it, especially if you love anything nautical or privateer oriented. There are lots of true villains, to be sure! Violence, surprises, gun fights....it has everything!

Helpful Hint: Keep a diagram from some on-line encyclopedia of the typical schooner of the 18th century nearby as you read. It should be labeled with terms like "forecastle", "bulwarks", and "mizzenmast". This will allow you to avoid using the dictionary very often.

I thought that the book Treasure Island was uniteresting and hard to understand. It was one of the books on my summer reading list, an it was one of the books I DID NOT enjoy. I do not reccomend this book. Don't read it!!!
