This is a great book. If you don't look for the underlining meanings you might not full appreciate the book. If you notice that in the beginning of the book Gregor (the main character) is so afraid of becoming like the other people who have his job and constantly has it at the back of his mind that he literally becomes someone that he never wanted to become (A lazy bug). I think that Kafka chose the cockroach for Gregor to become because a cockroach is resilient; which the human spirit is and can be applied to real life.
